Dirty Prayers:

I want you introduce you to Michael Nelder. This piece, “Dirty Prayers” from poet Michael Nelder closed out #RHETORIC2018. The piece was so moving, as he delicately shared the confessions of his prayer life with the audience. This piece is a suggestion to critically think about the prayers we pray on an individual level and what they say about our hearts. It is a beautiful examination of how gratitude can inform our prayers.

The Flow of Life

Like an ocean, the perception of self-flaws clashes and evolves with age, experience and time.

No one feels confident all the time, capable all of the time, committed all of the time… so what do you do when the tides change?

My advice is to set up reminders of your best self during a high tide while you are feeling motivated and refreshed. Cut out pictures, journal or even record a positive reminder of who you want to be and what you want out of life. The bible says, “make the vision clear.” While the journey can be unpredictable, there is a substantial benefit to adding intention into the recipe of life.

Having a vision will remind your flesh that low moments are temporal but the work you do now has the power to reconstruct your future.

Habakkuk 2:2-3 King James Version (KJV)

“2 And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.

For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.”

Lesson from my Daughter

My daughter taught me to love myself. Birthing a beautiful chocolate princess with cotton coils and a dimpled smile opened my eyes to the beauty that is me. The way she studies how I hold my shoulders curve my lips and tame my hair brought awareness to how I carried myself.

 I had to think …

“Am I teaching my daughter to like herself or love herself?”

“Am I putting up with my looks or appreciation my looks?”

Before my daughter I had not considered the importance of presenting myself to the world. Not as a performance, but in an intentional way that says, “I am important, I am loved, and I deserve respect.”

While I compliment my daughter and show her love, I realized that the most effective way to teach her self-worth and confidence is to SHOW self-worth and confidence.

Forgiveness Friday

Forgiveness is not saying you accept the person who wronged you. Instead, forgiveness is choosing to accept what happened as it happened rather than what could or should have happened. (psychology.com)

There are things that we can control in life, but a person’s personality is not one of them. If you are on this planet then there has been some instance where you did not get what you deserved, been lied to or worse.

I am here to tell you that holding on to the unforgiveness is punishing you and not the person who wronged you. Its time to understand what has happened and choose to forgive yourself and forgive the one who wronged you.

You are not able to change what has happened, but you can change the burden it carries.

Prayer for Teens:

I am step mother, foster mother, and biological mother and the one thing that I wanted to pass on to my children is prayer.

When I was younger, some mornings I would wake up before the sun kissed the sky, tip into the dark living room and catch my mother with her tattered bible praying for our household. Her prayer were meek.. whispered..but powerful. Her words seemed to run from room to room giving the sun permission to come through the window and bless each person sleeping with a smile.

I believe it was my mother’s and fathers prayers which carried me through my entire life. Below I have shared a prayer specifically for teens. Teens are in an in-between place where they are realizing their power on this earth but still requiring the supervision from adults. They are finding their way and need our prayers. Never stop kneeling, just like our mothers, fathers and grandmothers prayed for us… we need to pray for our teens as well.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, in the Name of Jesus, I affirm Your Word over my child/children. I commit ___________, my child/children; to You and affirm Your Word over them from Isaiah 54:13 that tells me my children shall be taught by the Lord and great shall be the peace of my children. I thank You that You deliver ____, ____out of rebellion into right relationship with us, his/her parents. In Exodus 20:12, Your Word teaches us that the first commandment given with a promise is to the child who obeys his/her parents in the Lord.

Father, you said in Deuteronomy 5:16 that all will be well with my child/children and ____, _____will live long on the earth. I affirm this promise on behalf of my child/children, asking You to give ____, ______, an obedient spirit that he/she may honor his/her father and mother. Father forgive me for mistakes made out of my own hurts or selfishness, which may have caused __________ hurt. I ask full and true repentance for the mistakes I have made in raising my children. I release the anointing that is upon Jesus to bind up and heal our broken hearts and the broken hearts of our children. Give us the ability to understand and forgive one another as God has forgiven us. Thank You for the Holy Spirit Who leads us into all truth and corrects any wrong perceptions about past or present situations. Thank You for teaching us to listen to each other and giving _____, _____ an ear that hears admonition, for then he/she will be called wise. I affirm that I will speak kind, excellent and Godly things and that any words coming out of my mouth will be the right words and will be used for Your glory Lord Jesus (Colossians 3:21).

Father, I promise to train and teach ____, ______ in the way that he/she is to go, and when ____, ______ is old he/she will not depart from You Lord but will follow You all the days of his/her life. In the Name of Jesus, I command the spirit of rebellion to be far from the heart of my child and confess that he/she is willing and obedient, free to enjoy the reward of Your promises. I ask that ______, ____ shall be peaceful, and a blessing to others. Father, according to Your Word we have been given the ministry of reconciliation, and I release this ministry and the word of reconciliation into this family. I refuse to provoke or irritate or belittle my child; I will not be hard on _____, _____or require perfection lest he/she becomes discouraged, feeling inferior and frustrated. I will not break his/her spirit, in the Name of Jesus and by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Father, I forgive my child for the wrongs he/she has done and stand in the gap until he/she begins to understand Your love and Your grace causing them to come out of the spirit of rebellion which is the snare of the enemy (Ephesians 6:1-3). We should not abandon hope in Your love and commitment to all Your creation. We know You Jesus, died for our children, even before they were born. Although It may seem to us that our children’s journey into selfishness, self-destruction and the world is never-ending, God we know You are at work in our children’s lives in ways we may never understand.

We ask you, Heavenly Father, for a quiet assurance that this process of conversion will take place and the inner peace that only You, Lord Jesus can give us, will now manifest in our lives, in the Name of Jesus. Help us to be strong like Mary, the mother of Jesus, as she wept and felt deep pain as she witnessed her Son’s journey knowing God’s plan; as You knew Your plans for our children, even before they were born (Jeremiah 1:2). Help us O Lord, to know and understand that we must let God control difficult situations and always be mindful to trust You. Heavenly Father help us to remember always that our children have belonged to you from the beginning. Help us Lord to understand that we are here to nurture them and guide them in Your ways while they are in our care. Lord, we have been mindful to raise them up in the way they should go, having made some mistakes of the flesh as we are not 8 perfects. We did what we thought was right at the time and we know that you, Lord, know our heart and honor that effort. It is so difficult, Lord, to understand them and to be the way they would like us to be. Even though it is difficult to understand we continue giving Glory to You and put our complete trust and expectancy in Your Word.

Thank You for reconciling the heart of our rebellious child back to us and our hearts back to our child. We declare the power of the enemy over our children, null and void according to (Psalms 55:12-14).

Thank You Lord, for our child/children ____, _____ and for holding each one of them in Your loving hands. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen

Plan for the absolute worst!

When opening my business, I looked at the finances, supplies, décor, and community connections, but the only thing I did not spend enough time on was the WORST-CASE SCENARIO.

The one thing I wish I had prepared for was all the horrible things that happens while running a business such as:

  • Unreliable employees
  • Building malfunctions
  • Crazy illogical customers

When planning a business, it’s easy to take note of all the wonderful things you will be doing as a business, but it is crucial that you understand that people are crazy. It may seem as if I’m being silly or facetious, but I am being serious. In order to run a successful business, you must plan for handling unfathomable situations.

What would you do if your loss power in your building? How would you handle a customer complaint? How do you handle lazy employees?  Can you afford to fire them and pay more for reliable employees? How can you control how your business is perceived on social media?

I believe wonderful things will happen in your business, but in order to survive you must consider the contrary things that happens as well. Today, take time and plan for the worst so that life can huff and puff but will not blow your business down.
